Beating Blackjack Shuffling Machines

February 10, 2024·5 min read

Casinos have long fought back against card counters, and one of their most effective tools is the continuous shuffling machine (CSM). If you're trying to count cards, understanding how these devices work is essential.

What Is a Continuous Shuffling Machine?

A CSM is an automated device that shuffles cards back into the shoe after every hand — or after a small group of hands. Unlike a standard shoe where the dealer waits until 70–80% of the deck is dealt before reshuffling, a CSM continuously reintroduces played cards.

The result: the shoe never becomes depleted of certain cards. There is no "penetration" — the key metric that makes card counting profitable.

Why CSMs Kill Card Counting

Card counting works because the composition of the remaining deck changes as cards are dealt. Once enough low cards have come out, the remaining deck is rich in high cards and you hold an edge.

With a CSM, every hand is essentially dealt from a freshly shuffled shoe. The count never builds. Your running count becomes meaningless after just one or two hands because those cards are back in the machine.

How to Identify a CSM Table

CSMs are usually obvious — there's a large mechanical device sitting at the end or side of the table, and the dealer feeds cards into it after each hand. Some players mistakenly confuse them with automatic shufflers (which shuffle a second shoe while the first is being played) — those are acceptable for counting.

Look for:

  • Cards returned to the machine after each hand
  • No discard tray filling up during the shoe
  • Immediate reshuffling

Your Options

Avoid CSM tables. This is the simplest advice. Seek out tables with standard 6- or 8-deck shoes. The deeper the penetration (how far through the shoe the dealer goes before reshuffling), the better your counting edge.

Play online with software. Live-dealer online blackjack often uses standard shoes with decent penetration. Our Blackjack Card Counter software is designed specifically for this environment — tracking the count while you play online.

Focus on game selection. In a live casino, walk the floor and find hand-shuffled or shoe games with 75%+ penetration. That's where your counting edge is strongest.

The Bottom Line

You cannot beat a CSM with card counting. Don't try. The good news is that CSM tables are easy to spot and easy to avoid. Stick to shoe games with deep penetration, or play online where software can assist your count.
